About

My family in Scotland in Summer 2015.

Who is the Math Coach?
My name is Ellen Dorsey, and I am the Math Coach for Washington Central Supervisory Union.  Before I became a math coach, I taught math in middle school and high school at U-32.   I have worked with teachers from the elementary grade levels through college on proficiency-based differentiated instruction strategies.

I live with my husband and two middle school-aged children in Waterbury, Vermont. I have a B.A. in Economics and Mathematics from Boston College and an Ed.M. from Harvard University.  In fall of 2014, I started a doctoral program in Educational Policy and Leadership at the University of Vermont where I am researching collaborative evaluation processes for instructional coaches. This year my position is full time with 80% of my time dedicated to preK-12 math instruction in six schools with an additional 20% of my time devoted to supporting teachers at Berlin Elementary.  Outside of school, you can find me playing in the woods in running shoes or on skis, reading or making something with my hands.

What does the Math Coach do?
It is my job to provide classroom coaching and modeling of instruction and assessment practices, to provide training for teachers and to consult with teachers on curriculum, assessment and instruction.  I facilitate Lesson Study and Curriculum Topic Study within WCSU as well as workshops on proficiency-based learning and providing student-centered, accessible learning environment for students.  I also spend time in coaching cycles with individual teachers and small teams.

Mostly, I view myself as a collaborating teacher.  Collaboration is what I have enjoyed most about teaching, and I believe that connecting teachers in meaningful and productive ways is the best catalyst for professional growth that will benefit us (as teachers) and our students. As we embrace the challenge of improving the performance of all students in our district, we will need to work together to develop and highlight models for best practices. I see the Math Coach as central to facilitating and supporting that collaborative work.

How do I get in touch?
It is very important to me to be available to teachers. I have a desk in the WCSU Central Office, but I am nearly never there because I spend the bulk of my time working "on-site" with teachers. I have created this blog to stay connected with teachers, to document our collaborative work and to highlight best practices in mathematics across our district. I have also created a Washington Central Supervisory Union Math website that contains resources and information.

I am often available to meet over Google Hangouts for modeling instruction and planning support. I post all of my videos on my youtube channel. If you have any special requests or want to set up a meeting please email me at edorsey@u32.org and I will get back to you promptly. I'm pretty obsessive about checking email.

To get updates, you can follow me on Google+, or sign up for email updates by subscribing to my blog.
